About Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT)
Important update: as of 2026 compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT / porcine thyroid / Thyroid USP bulk powder) is no longer available from US compounding pharmacies. The FDA issued enforcement action against unapproved animal-derived thyroid products, and licensed 503A/503B pharmacies are no longer filling compounded NDT prescriptions. FDA-approved desiccated thyroid products — Armour Thyroid, NP Thyroid, and WP Thyroid — remain available by prescription at regular retail pharmacies and contain the same T4/T3 combination. Patients who needed compounded NDT because of an allergen or filler issue may want to ask their prescriber about custom synthetic T3/T4 compounding, which is not affected by this FDA action.
Key Questions Before You Request Quotes
Can I get Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) compounded?
Not through Compounding Finder right now. A prescriber and pharmacist still have to decide whether any compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) preparation is legally and clinically appropriate.
Is a prescription needed?
Yes. Patient-specific 503A compounding is based on a valid prescription order or prescriber notation for an identified patient.
What affects price?
Strength, dosage form, quantity, ingredient sourcing, sterile versus non-sterile preparation, shipping requirements, and each pharmacy's workflow can all change the final quote.
How fast can I get quotes?
For routable requests, Compounding Finder typically returns quote options by email within 1-2 business days after you submit the request details.
What happens after I submit?
We review the request, route it to eligible licensed pharmacies, collect available options, and email you the quoted choices. You decide whether to move forward with a pharmacy.
Source notes: FDA explains that compounded drugs are not FDA-approved finished products and describes 503A compounding around patient-specific prescriptions. See Compounding and the FDA and Section 503A.
We Do Not Currently Route Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT) Quote Requests
Compounded Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT / porcine thyroid / Thyroid USP) is subject to FDA enforcement action against unapproved animal-derived thyroid products. US compounding pharmacies are no longer filling NDT prescriptions. FDA-approved NDT alternatives (Armour, NP Thyroid, WP Thyroid) remain available through retail pharmacies with a prescription. If FDA guidance changes, we will revisit.
What patients use instead of compounded NDT
Desiccated thyroid is still available — just not as a compounded preparation. The FDA-approved products below contain the same porcine-derived T4/T3 combination as compounded NDT and are filled at regular retail pharmacies with a prescription from your doctor.
- Armour ThyroidFDA-approved
The original FDA-approved porcine desiccated thyroid, manufactured by AbbVie. Contains a ~4:1 T4:T3 ratio. Widely stocked at retail pharmacies.
Typically $15–$40/month with insurance; cash prices vary by pharmacy — use GoodRx to compare.
Compare Armour Thyroid prices on GoodRx → - NP ThyroidFDA-approved
FDA-approved porcine desiccated thyroid manufactured by Acella. Same active ingredient as Armour; often a lower-cost alternative.
Often the lowest-cost FDA-approved NDT option. Also stocked at Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs at transparent pricing.
Compare NP Thyroid prices on GoodRx → - WP Thyroid / Nature-ThroidLimited availability
RLC Labs porcine desiccated thyroid with fewer fillers than Armour or NP. Supply has been intermittent over the last several years — check with your pharmacy before relying on it.
Check WP Thyroid availability on GoodRx → - Custom synthetic T3/T4 compoundingStill routable
If you needed compounded NDT because of an allergen or filler issue with commercial products, custom synthetic T3/T4 compounding is not affected by the FDA's NDT action. A prescriber can specify the exact T3:T4 ratio, release profile, and excipient profile you need.
